Liam Coen has second interview scheduled with Jacksonville Jaguars
The Chicago Bears officially won the Ben Johnson sweepstakes on Tuesday when the Detroit Lions offensive coordinator decided to stay in the NFL North to partner with former No. 1 pick Caleb Williams. That was the first big head coaching search domino to fall in the NFL.
The next one could happen in Jacksonville as this AFC South franchise moves into the next step of its search process. Former Kentucky offensive coordinator Liam Coen is very much in the mix to become Trevor Lawrence’s third head coach in five seasons.
Liam Coen will meet with the Jaguars front office this week for a second interview. Jacksonville general manager Trent Baalke and ownership will also meet with Las Vegas Raiders defensive coordinator Patrick Graham and former New York Jets head coach Robert Saleh.

Coen, 39, spent four seasons (2018-20, 2022) working under Sean McVay for the Los Angeles Rams. The former UMass quarterback had two separate one year stints as the Kentucky offensive coordinator in 2021 and 2023. Coen served as McVay’s non-play-calling offensive coordinator for the Rams in 2022 before leaving Kentucky to call plays for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2024. In his first season as a primary NFL play-caller, the Bucs won the NFC South and finished No. 7 in offensive DVOA. Tampa Bay averaged 29.5 points per game and 6.2 yards per play. Baker Mayfield set career highs in completion percentage (71.4%), yards per attempt (7.9), touchdowns (41), and passing success rate (53.9%) in 17 starts in Coen’s offense. Fourth round pick Bucky Irving rushed for 1,122 yards as a rookie and Mike Evans went over 1,000 receiving yards for an 11th consecutive season.
The former NFL play-caller could become a head coach in the league very soon. Liam Coen will certainly try to sell to Jacksonville that he can help Trevor Lawrence bounce-back at quarterback after a couple of tough seasons in a row that have been filled with injuries after helping Mayfield find some stability in Los Angeles after a rocky 2022 season before ultimately becoming one of the NFL’s most productive quarterbacks in 2024.
Kentucky’s two-time offensive coordinator could be an NFL head coach very soon.
