Liam Coen says leaving Kentucky for Tampa Bay was a "no-brainer"
Leaving Kentucky comes easy for Liam Coen. He enjoys it so much, he’s done it twice in three seasons. He described the latest move as a “no-brainer” as he was being introduced as the next offensive coordinator of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
“This was a no-brainer for me,” Coen said while wearing a red pastel blazer.
“I mean obviously the opportunity to work with Baker (Mayfield), to get back with him potentially, John Wolford’s in the room that I coached with the Rams for multiple years. The skillset on the perimeter, obviously, youth in the running back room, tight end, and one of the best tackles in the National Football League.
“This was altogether really something we could not turn away from whatsoever. This is something that we’re really excited about as a family. My father lives an hour and a half from Tampa, I’ve spent a lot of time down here, and this was just a no-brainer for us.”
Sound familiar? That’s because it’s almost the exact same thing he said the last time he left Kentucky.
“This was too good to turn down,” Coen said as he was introduced as the Rams offensive coordinator in January of 2022.
Similar to today’s speech, he brought up a family member’s connection to the area, his wife. Then he shared more effusive praise about the organizations and the individuals he knows well within it. Instead of Baker Mayfield catching Coen’s eye, it was Matthew Stafford. He also shared his gratitude for a year spent at Kentucky.

“Loved my time at Kentucky in the SEC and college football again, but this opportunity was too good to pass up.”
Fast forward to today, Stoops received a shoutout from his old employee. Coen thanked him for an opportunity to “get my feet wet” as a play-caller, then turned his attention to Sean McVay, “for giving me my PhD in coaching.”
Liam Coen made leaving Kentucky a habit. I doubt it’s one he’ll be able to continue anytime in the near future.
