Kentucky football’s offensive coordinator, Liam Coen, made a pitstop in Ohio this week to meet with one of the nation’s top high school signal callers. Coen paid a visit to Findlay High School on Tuesday afternoon to watch class of 2025 four-star quarterback Ryan Montgomery throw during team practice.

Montgomery, who clocks in at 6-foot-3, 210 pounds, is considered the No. 162 prospect in the ’25 class and the No. 11 overall QB, per the On3 Industry Ranking. Also in attendance for Findlay’s practice on Tuesday were coaches from the likes of Purdue, Florida, and Michigan State.

Coen has led this recruitment from the moment he took back over as UK’s OC, getting the ball rolling with an offer to Montgomery while on his visit to Kentucky for Junior Day in late January. Montgomery then made a return visit to UK in late March to watch spring practice. Contact between the two sides has remained steady ever since.

“He is really laid back but super smart,” Montgomery told KSR about Coen through text on Tuesday night. “I really love that he got to coach Matt Stafford last year and understands what it takes to be successful at the next level. Runs a true pro-style offense.”

Due to NCAA rules, Coen wasn’t able to directly speak with Montgomery in person, but the two did talk on the phone after his workout had concluded. Coen is already planning to come back for another practice visit in May.

I feel like a top priority of (Coen) for sure,” Montgomery added. “I have enjoyed getting to know him better.”

Montgomery is being recruited by the country’s most notable football schools. He’s already earned offers from the likes of Ohio State (where his older brother, four-star OL Luke Montgomery, is a soon-to-be freshman), Notre Dame, Michigan, Tennessee, Penn State, Georgia, Texas A&M, Auburn, and plenty more. Colorado, now coached by Deion Sanders, extended an offer earlier this month. Clemson is on the brink of doing the same.

Kentucky first established contact with Montgomery last summer in June during his first trip to Lexington when Rich Scangarello was the Wildcats’ offensive coordinator. Montgomery would return to campus again in November, but once Coen was brought back into the fold, Kentucky began to really pick up the pace.
