Kentucky offensive coordinator Liam Coen was connected with multiple job openings this offseason. The most prominent position is no longer vacant.

Tom Pelissero of NFL Media reports the Chicago Bears are working toward a deal to hire Shane Waldron as their next offensive coordinator. Waldron spent the last three seasons calling plays for the Seahawks. He previously worked for Sean McVay in Los Angeles.

When Kentucky initially hired Coen, many around the Big Blue Nation (myself included) thought Waldron was the “mystery candidate” from the Rams. Like the 2021 coaching carousel, this move by Waldron will ultimately benefit Kentucky.

In addition to the Bears’ vacancy, Coen was also reportedly in the mix to become the Ohio State offensive coordinator. The Buckeyes landed on former Alabama and New England Patriots offensive coordinator Bill O’Brien.

Over the weekend Liam Coen was in Lexington hosting a few talented 2025 recruits, QB Stone Saunders and IOL Tucker Kattus. Winter workouts have begun at the Joe Craft Football Training Facility. In two weeks Kentucky will really amplify its recruiting efforts with Junior Day.

The coaching carousel will continue spinning for weeks across the NFL. There’s a chance Coen may be connected to another vacancy, but it’s safe to expect to see the New England native on Kentucky sidelines in the fall of 2024.
