LOOK: Mississippi State Salutes Mike Leach with Helmet Decal
The Mississippi State Bulldogs will be playing their first football game without Mike Leach calling the shots. It’s perfectly fitting that they will be playing in a stadium with a pirate ship in the end zone.
The late, great Air Raid innovator rose to fame through his high-powered offense, and gained even more popularity with his off the field antics. Living by the “Swing Your Sword” mantra, that’s exactly how the Bulldogs will honor him in today’s ReliaQuest Bowl.
Mississippi State will ditch their traditional logo. Instead, their helmets will feature the Jolly Rodger, accompanied by his initials, M.L.

Zach Arnett will be the head coach on the sideline when Mississippi State (-3.5) takes on Illinois at Noon on ESPN2.
Mississippi State is not the only school to honor Mike Leach this bowl season. TCU, coached by Air Raid disciple Sonny Dykes, added a pirate flag sticker to the back of their helmets for the CFB Playoff win over Michigan. Arkansas, Alabama and Georgia also rocked a decal that was identical to the “MIKE” decal Kentucky wore to honor their former offensive coordinator in the Music City Bowl.
