LSU owes Kentucky $100K for storming the court
I doubt it makes anyone reading this feel better — except maybe the person in charge of UK Athletics’ finances — but LSU’s win over Kentucky last night came with a cost. The Tigers have been fined $100,000 by the SEC for fans storming the court following the 75-74 buzzer-beating victory. Because it happened during a league game, that money will go to the opposing institution, aka, your University of Kentucky Wildcats.
This is the second time this season Kentucky has made $100,000 for losing a basketball game. The first came almost a month ago, on Jan. 23 at South Carolina following the Gamecocks’ 79-62 victory over the Cats. Maybe former LSU Tiger/current Houston Rocket Tari Eason, who was in the middle of the melee, can chip in, or LSU women’s basketball star Angel Reece, whose On3 NIL valuation is $1.7 million.
The SEC adopted its new “Competition Area Policy” at the Spring Meetings in 2023. For the first offense, schools owe $100,000. For the second, that number is increased to $250,000, and $500,000 for each time after. As mentioned, if it occurs during a conference game, the school must pay it to the opposing school. In non-conference games, schools are required to give the money to the SEC Post-Graduate Scholarship Fund.
Money is nice, but let’s stop making it that way, please.
