Maddie Scherr makes big comeback against Louisville in first game since Nov. 30
Kentucky Women’s Basketball senior Maddie Scherr has played a total of seven out of 11 games this season. Scherr, who sustained an ankle injury in the second game of the season against USC Upstate on Nov. 11, only played 21 minutes that game. Scherr sat out two games, both losses (Austin Peay and Florida Gulf Coast). The guard played all three games at the Paradise Jam in the U.S. Virgin Islands, and then was injured again in the Wildcats’ 83-81 win over Boston College on Nov. 30. Since then, Scherr had been in concussion protocol, and sat the two games.
Scherr made her comeback on Sunday against in-state rival, No. 18 Louisville. The ‘Cats fell 73-61, but that didn’t Scherr from putting up a good fight. The senior has proven she has what it takes to be a point producer, given that she scored a career high 25 against Cincinnati, and has scored double-digits in every game since then. In fact, Scherr has hit double-digits in six out of her seven games this season. The outlier being a 84-55 loss to NC State where she only scored seven.
On Sunday, Scherr collected 22 points on 8-15 shooting, including four three-pointers. The guard reached double-digits at the end of the first quarter, but after getting into some foul trouble, she wasn’t as active for the remainder of the game. Scherr also added five rebounds, two assists, and a block. She also tied her career-high in steals with three.
“Well, it is good to have Maddie back,” head coach Kyra Elzy said in the postgame press conference. “What I love about her, she’s a competitor. She knows how to make other people around her better.” Scherr also said she was glad to be back on the floor, but didn’t say much else following the loss to Louisville.
