While we traditionally think of Memorial Coliseum as the place where some of Kentucky women’s basketball’s most special moments have occurred, we should now start to think of Transy’s Clive M. Beck Center as one of those places as well.

While the ‘Cats did go 4-0 at the local venue this season, the best part of UK’s time in the Beck Center actually came away from the action.

As Kentucky fought its way to a 72-59 win over the Samford Bulldogs on Sunday, there was a young fan, Mia, sitting courtside rooting for Maddie Scherr and the Wildcats as she rocked Scherr’s jersey. Scherr responded to a post of the two with the caption “The best part of it ❤️”.

We’ve all been there as fans. Getting to go watch your favorite team play and screaming your head off as you root for a victory is what it’s all about. It becomes that much more special when you finally get to see your favorite team and players in person. It’s like you’re watching the superheroes take down the evil villains.

For Mia specifically, she got to see her favorite hero, Maddie Scherr, dominate against the villainous Samford Bulldogs.

Scherr scored 14 points, marking her seventh consecutive game scoring in double-digits. In addition, she grabbed a season-high eight rebounds and dished out five assists against Samford. In her last three games, Scherr has racked up 20 total assists. The Florence, KY native has been impressive all season, to say the least.

As a result of her solid performance, Kentucky was able to cruise to their third straight victory and Mia was able to celebrate. Following the game, Scherr actually met up with Mia and exchanged words with her, giving the youngster yet another special memory to take home with her.

Meeting Maddie Scherr

You see, this wasn’t actually the first time that Scherr and Mia had met. KSR talked with Mia’s father about how Scherr has been building her relationship with the young fan, even from years ago. Mia and her family used to live in Lexington, but then they relocated to Union, KY, the home of Ryle High School. That so happens to be where Scherr went to high school.

A few years ago, Scherr held a day camp in Florence, and that’s where Mia would meet her favorite player for the first time. Ever since then, Mia’s love for the game of basketball (and Scherr) has only grown. So, you could imagine just how awesome it was for Mia to attend the Samford game. Mia got her Maddie Scherr jersey for Christmas, and she was thrilled to wear it as she rooted on the ‘Cats.

The Samford game was also Mia’s first UK game, and she was so excited about it that she wanted to skip getting lunch just to get a good seat in the Beck Center. During warmups, Scherr recognized Mia and high-fived her. The senior guard even gave Mia a UK ball following the player intros. Then, Mia got the chance to talk to Scherr postgame.

Mia’s father mentioned to KSR that Scherr was “nice and engaged” with his daughter. They talked about the camp that the two had met at years before, and Mia also told Scherr about how she is even the ball girl for Ryle’s high school girl’s basketball team. Mia was gifted an autograph from Scherr, too. Additionally, Scherr told KSR about her side from her interaction with Mia as well. The senior guard said that Mia was incredibly sweet and that she was “the cutest little girl”.

And just going off of this picture, Scherr was probably right. Absolutely adorable.

The game of women’s basketball is an emerging sport, thanks in part to players like Maddie Scherr. Sure, it helps that she’s a remarkable player on the floor, but it’s the fact that she’s a remarkable person off the floor that matters the most.

Keep being you, 22.
