Former Kentucky women’s basketball guard Maddie Scherr announced that she would be taking a medical redshirt for the remainder of the 2024-25 season and return for TCU next year. The senior suffered a back injury after transferring to play for the Horned Frogs in April.

A Bluegrass native and Ryle High School graduate, Scherr played at Kentucky for two seasons from 2022-2024 under former Head Coach Kyra Elzy. Following Elzy’s departure after the 2023-24 season, Scherr entered the transfer portal along with most of her teammates. While some players made their way to other SEC schools, Scherr found herself at TCU with Sedona Prince and Hailey Van Lith.

However, the guard hasn’t played in a single game for the Horned Frogs, and now fans know why.

Scherr actually began her college career at Oregon, where she stayed for two seasons before transferring back home. While at Kentucky, she played a large part in her team’s production.

In the 2022-23 season, Scherr averaged 11.6 points and 5.1 rebounds per game. She added 125 assists (4.3 per game), 62 steals (2.1 per game) and 32 blocks (1.1 per game). The guard ranked fourth in the SEC in assists per game and sixth in steals per game. She concluded her junior season as the SEC leader in free throw percentage (91.8%). Scherr shot 110-286 (38.5%) from the field and 37-110 (33.6%) from three. She set a career-high 27 points against Tennessee and scored double-digits in 17 games. She also set a new program record for blocks in an SEC Tournament game with six against Alabama.

During her senior season, Scherr was sidelined for six games, two from an ankle injury and four due to concussion protocol. Despite missing those six games, Scherr had a very successful 2023-24 campaign for the Wildcats. She played and started in all 26 of her eligible games, and averaged 12.5 points and 4.8 rebounds per game. She totaled 89 assists and 41 steals on the season and recorded two 25+ point games.

Now that Scherr is taking a medical redshirt, she has one year of eligibility remaining and announced she’d be spending the 2025-26 season at TCU. Best of luck Maddie!
