June 30 will be a busy day for Kentucky football recruiting. Three-star EDGE prospect Makai Byerson is yet another Kentucky target that will commit next Friday joining Dominic Kirks and Jac’Qawn McRoy.

The Midlothian (Va.) Manchester product announced on Thursday that he will be making his college decision next week just one day before beginning an official visit with Virginia Tech.

Byerson is the No. 735 ranked player in the 2024 On3 Industry Ranking. The 6-foot-3, 235-pound defensive prospect is the No. 15 player in Virginia. Defensive coordinator Brad White is running point on this recruitment for the Wildcats, and Byerson was in Lexington for his second official visit last weekend.

The three-star prospect told KSR’s Zack Geoghegan that Kentucky and West Virginia were tied for the lead in his recruitment following consecutive weekend official visits to both programs. White sees Byerson being a similar player to two former Wildcats.

“Me and Coach White sat down and we went over the defense and went over a lot of film,” Byerson said. “Compared it to Josh Allen[Josh] Paschal, those boys, and how he thinks I can have a similar play style like them and how he feels like I will fit perfectly in the defense. I had a meeting with [Mark] Stoopswe talked about how I’m a priority for them and answered any questions I had.”

Makai Byerson has made multiple trips to Virginia Tech in the last three months. Do not count out head coach Brent Pry and the Hokies in this recruitment. However, Kentucky appears to be in solid shape in this battle with a commitment coming soon.
