Mark Pope's car ran out of gas in the middle of the road this morning

As it turns out, Mark Pope does run out of gas — just not his own. The energetic and tireless new head coach of Kentucky men’s basketball apparently had quite the Tuesday morning.

Kentucky fan @DrewMerriman sent out a post this morning on X (formerly Twitter) saying that she saw someone being helped out by the Lexington Metro Police in the middle of Broadway in downtown Lexington. The individual stuck in the middle of the road had run out of gas and needed assistance getting their car out of the way. The road had to be cut down from two lanes to one.

The person in question holding up traffic? Mark Pope.

This isn’t the first time we’ve heard of Pope’s car troubles since his return to Lexington as head coach — although the first instance took place in an entirely different country. During a recruiting trip to Argentina in June, his rental car was a stick shift, which he fully admitted isn’t exactly his strong suit. Luckily, he made it out without too much hassle.

I’m sure many of us out there understand Pope’s pain this morning all too well. A car running out of gas is a constant fear of mine from the moment my indicator dips under a quarter tank. Hopefully, the Pope Mobile is back up and running again. He’s got a preseason game to coach tomorrow night, after all.
