For the first time in five years and 353 total episodes, the head men’s basketball coach at the University of Kentucky is a special guest on the Sources Say Podcast. Live from the Joe Craft Center, Mark Pope welcomed Shawn Smith and I into his office exactly one week ahead of Big Blue Madness to share his thoughts on the start of the season and a new era of UK basketball.

The 32-minute conversation covers just about everything — the six months since he was hired, his coaching philosophies, early expectations, roster construction, recruiting, Rick Pitino and his sleep schedule.

He promises he gets sleep, by the way, mastering the art of 10-minute power naps.

Oh, and maybe a big-time recruiting tease? Pope talked about how his favorite recruiting win is one he’s in the process of working on now — a chess match, as he describes it.
