Mark Stoops provides update on Liam Coen following medical episode
The health of Liam Coen is on everyone’s mind today following the news of the medical episode he suffered yesterday. Mark Stoops did not directly address the situation in his opening remarks at today’s press conference but did say the prognosis is “good” for everyone on his staff after a scary Sunday.
“It’s been a challenging day or so for us,” Stoops said. “We will continue to push forward as always. I think the prognosis of things looks good with the people in our office and that will be back in our office. I’ll leave it at that on that subject.”
When asked how Kentucky’s offense will prepare for Akron given Coen’s situation, Stoops said there is a plan in place, but declined to say who will call plays on Saturday.
“We’ll be fine. We’ve got it under control. We’ve worked extremely hard after a challenging day. We had a good work night. Got some things in place and we will move forward and get corrections made from this past game.”
Last night, UK released a statement saying that Coen had a “medical episode” at the Kentucky Football training facility on Sunday and was in good condition at UK Chandler Hospital. He is expected to be released today.

Stoops shares emotions, appreciation for first responders
While Stoops remained tight-lipped on the details of Coen’s health, he did get emotional later on when asked what the past 24 hours have been like for him and his staff.
“It’s always a challenge because we have a very tight staff, you know, a big group. I’ve been here 11 years, John [Clay], I don’t think I’ve ever gotten emotional on this thing, so don’t try to get me. You just asking me that, I almost, you know what I mean? The emotions could come out on me right now because we love each other and we work and put a lot of pressure on ourselves.
“So, when anything happens to any of our staff members, it’s hard. I can’t dive into too much but we have a lot of special people there. As I mentioned in the opening statement, with your appreciation for any police, fire [fighters], EMS, doctors, and what appreciation you have when you need them.”
Best wishes to Coen for a full and quick recovery.
