“Masai Russell will be an Olympic gold medalist.”

Those were the famous last words for the former Kentucky track and field superstar, speaking not only a podium appearance into existence, but a first-place finish in the Women’s 100M Hurdle Final at the 2024 Paris Olympics. And sure enough, she was right.

In a race featuring not one, not two, but three Wildcats, it was Masai Russell earning gold in yet another photo finish with a 12.33. Jasmine Camacho-Quinn earned bronze with a 12.36, giving the program two of three at the podium. Current volunteer assistant coach Devynne Charlton finished in sixth with a 12.56.

Neck and neck from start to finish, check out Russell’s gold-winning effort in her very first appearance at the Olympics.

Though Camacho-Quinn is the Olympic record-holder in the Women’s 100mH with a 12.26 back in 2021 at the Tokyo Olympics, Russell entered the event confident she’d return home with a gold medal.

“Success for me will be walking out with a medal. I want it to be gold, for sure,” Russell told NBC earlier in the week. “I’m not coming to sell myself short for third or second. If it falls between there, that’s where it falls, but I’m here to put my name on the map in the world and let them know who Masai Russell is by coming out of here with the dub.”

The world now knows who Masai Russell is.

What’s next for the Cats in Paris? Alexis Holmes will be joining Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone in the Women’s 4x400m Relay Final at 3:22 p.m. ET on NBC and Peacock. That will wrap up track and field festivities for Kentucky’s representatives in Paris.

Elsewhere, Bam Adebayo, Devin Booker and Anthony Davis will take the floor with Team USA in the Men’s Basketball 5×5 Gold Medal Game against host country France at 3:30 p.m. ET on NBC and Peacock.

Two medals down on Saturday, potentially five more to go before the day concludes. And then on Sunday, Avery Skinner and the U.S. Women’s Volleyball team will take on Italy in the Gold Medal Match at 7:00 a.m. ET, also on NBC and Peacock.

Russell and Camacho-Quinn set the tone for the rest of the weekend. Time to finish the job, Cats.
