It’s a complicated time around the world of college sports as it relates to name, image and likeness. Everyone is adapting on the fly, learning the rules and regulations all while competing with other schools on the recruiting trail for players looking for new opportunities in the space.

More specifically, money. Lots and lots of money.

UK Athletics has made significant strides from when NIL was first introduced, but things still aren’t where they need to be. The basketball program is doing fine — smaller pool of players with a bigger national brand — but the football program continues to fight for help. And as that fight continues, other programs are making runs at Kentucky’s talent.

KSR’s Matt Jones spoke on the topic Wednesday morning on his radio show, explaining what changes must be made to ensure UK Athletics isn’t left behind in the world of NIL. In short, Kentucky football is fine and will continue to be regarding its star talent. If the help with collectives doesn’t improve, though — specifically involving coaches having greater opportunities to use their platforms to raise money — depth could take a serious hit.

Should things remain the same, UK will be able to get and keep players like Devin Leary, Barion Brown and Deone Walker. The same can’t be said for players such as Justin Rogers, who entered the transfer portal in part due to NIL.

Matt Jones broke it all down in depth to open the second hour of KSR, discussing where things stand and what needs to change sooner rather than later. Take a look at the complete segment below:
