Meet Blue, the Goldendoodle pup of Kentucky WBB's Maddie Scherr
Georgia has Uga. Texas has Bevo. Now, Kentucky has Blue.
However, before the nine-month-old Goldendoodle ever joined Wildcat Nation, Maddie Scherr did first.
After finishing up a successful career at Ryle High School, the 2020 Miss Kentucky Basketball moved across the country to play for Oregon. After two seasons of priceless memories, Scherr decided it was time to come home.
Yet, home doesn’t have quite the same charm when it’s a lonely apartment in downtown Lexington. Silence replaces the laughter of your former roommates. Netflix nights replace evenings out on the town. And, inevitably, loneliness creeps around the corner, even when you’re back in the state you’re most familiar with.
Enter Blue.
“Blue was a gift from my grandpa and my grandma,” Scherr said in an interview with KSR. “We have three other Goldendoodles in our family so it was very encouraged that I should get one. It kind of just happened.”

Scherr is thankful it did. After all, Blue is a low-maintenance roommate. The copper-colored pup rarely leaves the bed, outsleeps his on-the-go mom, and is happy as long as a bowl of food is in front of him.
While Blue is satisfied living Scherr’s introverted lifestyle, he can flip his social switch on at a moment’s notice.
“I’m kind of an introvert. I’d rather just take him out, let him go to the bathroom and then take him back up, but I end up having conversations with people every time,” Scherr said. “I can’t help him. He just loves to say hi to people. And, you know, he kind of helps that side of me.”
When Blue isn’t chatting up the neighbors or counting sheep, the snickerdoodle-styled canine is quite the athlete. Blue will burn rubber through Scherr’s hallways playing fetch or even tear up the Craft Center hardwood from time to time.

“Whenever I come to the gym to shoot at night, I’ll bring Blue,” Scherr said with a laugh. “He loves it. He’ll go chase after balls for me. It’s just the best having my little shadow with me all the time.”
A star is born
Blue doesn’t only shadow Scherr on the court, but on social media, too. If you look up “bluescherr” on Instagram, you’ll find the pooch’s profile with almost 200 followers. Yup, nearly 200 followers for a furry friend.
Blue’s account ranges from videos of him roughhousing with his friends to evidence of his mischievous escapades. Scherr was stunned by how many people took an interest in her puppy’s daily activities.
“Really, it was a joke at first. I think I was with one of my teammates and I was like, ‘Maybe I should make Blue an Instagram,'” Scherr reflected. “I am kind of surprised that there are a lot of people who know about [Blue’s profile], which I think is funny.”
Scherr shouldn’t be too surprised. The Kentucky star has over 60,000 followers between Instagram and TikTok alone. The next question was obvious: “When is Scherr and Blue’s NIL merchandise hitting the market?” Scherr was already on top of it.
“That actually has been in the works with my agents of getting some type of NIL deal with some type of dog company,” Scherr said. “Hopefully, there will be something out soon.”
