Mississippi State head coach Mike Leach is an enigma. When members of the media ask questions about his current football team, he dodges the inquiries better than Patches O’Houlihan. If you ask him about old football games, he’ll oblige, but he is at his best when discussing topics completely unrelated to college football. This week, coffee entered his crosshairs.

Prior to kickoff against Arkansas, Marty Smith joined the Mississippi State head coach on the field at Davis Wade Stadium. The SEC Network broadcaster posed a simple question: “How do you take your coffee?”

“Coffee tastes terrible anyway, so don’t put anything in it to obstruct the harsh, bitter taste. Just put it down one sip at a time,” Leach said. “The experience is terrible.”

There is some truth to what he’s saying. A wise man once told me there are three things that will never taste good on the first try: beer, cigarettes and coffee. Nobody takes their first puff of a Marlboro and says, “Ah, smooth.” When you first snuck a beer from Dad’s fridge, you probably told your friends it was great, while choking it down ever so slowly. The same can be said for black coffee.

However, as a 61-year-old man, Mike Leach has had enough cups of coffee in his lifetime to learn to love the taste. In my younger days, I could not appreciate the varying flavors different bitter cups of coffee provide. Now one of the best parts of my day, I’ll mix it up different kinds of coffee throughout the day to keep the tastebuds guessing, regularly providing caffeinated fulfillment.

You don’t need to sweeten it up like Mark Stoops, but just because black coffee is bitter does not mean it tastes bad. Grow up, Mike.

Leach’s coffee criticism stirred conversation on Monday night’s KSR Football Podcast. The KSR crew wears out the Kroger Field pressbox coffee machine during Kentucky football games. Naturally, we had some strong thoughts about the Mississippi State coach’s opinion. Have a listen.
