Mikhail McLean, Bahamas falls to Spain in FIBA World Olympic Qualifying Tournament
Kentucky’s new assistant coach under Mark Pope, Mikhail McLean, was on the brink of making history with the Bahamas; one win away from a ticket to the 2024 Paris Olympics.
But on Sunday, the Bahamas fell to Spain 86-78 in the Olympic Qualifying Finals, just short of securing their spot in the games. This makes it 63 years since the Bahamas have competed on the Olympic stage.
The Bahamas squad is led by Portland Trailblazers center DeAndre Ayton, who finished with 17 points on 8-14 shooting, 14 boards and two assists. Ayton put on a show throughout the tournament, averaging 19.5 points and 11.8 boards while shooting 64.2% from the field.
Buddy Hield, who was recently traded from the Philadelphia 76ers to the Golden State Warriors, led the Bahamas in the final game with 19 points. Eric Gordon is another star on the Bahamas squad. The new 76ers signee notched 15 points in the final game of the Bahamas road to Paris.

Unfortunately for the Bahamas, McLean and company will be headed back to their respective homes, just short of a shot at Paris. Fortunately for us here in Kentucky, Pope and the Kentucky basketball team get to have their assistant coach back in Lexington.
A ticket to Paris could’ve been beneficial to add onto McLean’s already stacked resume, but the experience of leading professional ballplayers to their closest shot at the Olympics will speak for itself.
We’re eager to welcome you back to your new home, Mikhail.
