As the great Otega Oweh once said (literally four days ago), “This is y’all Super Bowl.” Kentucky got it in Athens, and now, the Wildcats are about to get it again in Starkville.

KSR’s Steven Peake wandered over to Humphrey Coliseum on Saturday for an early look at Mississippi State fans, just to get the lay of the land and get a feel for the buzz around campus in the hours leading up to tonight’s top-15 matchup. What he found will not surprise you.

They’ve been camping out since midnight last night — tents and all.

A group of students slept outside The Hump, hoping to be first in line before the mad rush this afternoon and tonight. They say it’s their first time setting up tents and sleeping outside for a basketball game. It’s the longest they’ve ever waited for a game.

“Before today, it was about 10 to 12 hours. That was Kentucky last year,” the fan said.

Mississippi State has not beaten Kentucky since 2009, the campers’ ages ranging from two to six years old. Fast forward a decade and a half and excitement is high under Chris Jans, ready to get that big blue monkey off their backs.

“It’s been awesome, especially with football not being as great this year,” one fan said. “Seeing the success of the team — the entire student body has been basically getting together and wanting to pack The Hump this year. We’re ready to be a basketball school, hopefully.”

Is this the year it happens?

“This year the offense is much better than past years,” the fan continued. “We’ve been just defense. This year we’ve got the offense to do it.”

They all predicted wins. Time to prove them wrong.

More chaos coming from Starkville.
