Monday Night Football Notes for the UK Fans of the Day

Are you ready for some football? We still have a lot of time to wait for the start of the Kentucky football season. There are plenty of summer days by the pool in front of us before the crisp fall air invites us back to the gridiron, but we’ve got some pigskin to address in the meantime.

Where the Kentucky QB Situation Ranks Nationally
The quarterback position has not been a strength for the Wildcats in the Mark Stoops era. It’s actually surprising how much success they’ve had in spite of subpar play at the most important position in the sport.
Despite some late-season flashes from Cutter Boley, the Cats went back to the transfer portal well following Brock Vandagriff‘s retirement. Unlike Vandagriff, Kentucky sought out experience and Zach Calzada has plenty of it. He will be playing in his seventh college football season this fall after making stops at Texas A&M, Auburn, and Incarnate Word.
Calzada is bringing experience, but not much fanfare. He’s been ranked as the worst quarterback in the SEC. Today, ESPN’s David Hale released a thorough tier system for all 136 FBS quarterback situations. Kentucky is in tier 13 out of 20. The tier is titled “Wily Veterans” and is just one spot ahead of “Best of the Group of 5.”
You may not think it’s great, but I’m here to say you’re wrong. The best quarterback play of the Stoops era has happened when expectations are the lowest, and that’s certainly the case this year.

Kentucky Football Camps around the Corner
Things are quiet around the Joe Craft Football Training Facility. Players have the month off before reporting to summer workouts in June. That’s when recruiting will get hot and heavy. Official visits begin the week after Memorial Day. Unofficial visitors will be frequent flyers when camps begin a week later. This year there are only four, about half of what we’ve seen in the past. The significance of camps has been diminished as official visits have moved earlier and earlier. Nevertheless, KSR will be in the house when the action kicks off June 8.
Very Important Data
The UFL can produce some fun highlights during the spring. It’s not the best football, but it is football, which means things get silly. The silliest the sport has to offer right now is in Washington D.C. where Defenders fans are crushing beers and showing off their receipts. Beer Snake Science is Sports Science at its best.
