The Ohio Valley Conference’s Defensive Player of the Year put his name in the transfer portal on Monday morning. Could Kentucky show some interest in the in-state star?

Johni Broome, a 6-foot-10 forward who has played his last two seasons at Morehead State, will be one of the most sought-after talents in the portal. Not only was he named OVC Defensive Player of the Year this past season, but he was also named 1st Team All-OVC and later tabbed to the OVC All-Tournament Team. Broome appeared in 34 games for the Eagles in 2021-22, averaging 16.8 points, 10.5 rebounds, and 3.9 blocks per game on 55.5 percent overall shooting from the field.

Broome was an impressive prospect at Morehead State during his freshman season in 2020-21, but he took a leap in production in year two. His 131 blocks broke an MSU single-season record, he led the conference in rebounding, and he was the star on a team that was one game away from making it to the NCAA Tournament. Broome spent his time at Morehead State under head coach Preston Spradlin, who previously worked under John Calipari at Kentucky for five seasons.

On March 31, Broome announced that he would test the NBA Draft waters and not sign an agent, leaving open the possibility for a return.
