My Personal Favorite Football Recruit

by:Matt Jones10/09/06
If you havent guessed yet over your time reading this blog, I love getting the absurd players. Woo has provided me more joy than just about any straight man should have, and I have a feeling that a 7 foot Brit has potential to carry on the torch for the future. But football is somewhat devoid of such characters. Perhaps it is because the players always wear helmets, so we cant see their goofy expressions during games, but football personalities tend to all blend together. Some have said that Dickie Lyons is nuts or that Wesley Woodyard will make you smile, but I just dont know. They all seem the same to me and the only personality I can find are the ones I impart on the players with no basis in fact (for instance in my head, Fatu TuriTuri is a great ventriloquist who does a mean rendition of "Hello Dolly."). Along those lines, something is attracting me to the Kentucky linebacker recruit above, Shane Watson. Maybe it is the fact that he is being recruited by Kentucky, Vanderbilt, Georgia and Tennessee and he is considered one of the best players in the state of Tennessee. Maybe it is that he plays for the "Carter Hornets", a team that seems to have its name derived out of the Archie Comic Books. Or maybe it is the fact that he looks like a 35 year old man who should be dipping and standing outside the dilapidated Shell station in Letcher County, Kentucky looking at a 73 Chevrolet Caprice while pointing and mumbling "if you get er a new transmission, she'll run with the best of em." Yeah I think it is the latter. Look this is a kid with a 4.6 40 yard dash time and football IQ that is making many SEC teams take notice. But for me Shane Watson needs none of that to be a star. He looks like the kind of guy that would have great stories to tell, is always up for a good cock fight and would fix your flat tire in a second and not let you pay him anything for it. All that, and he may be slowly losing his hair.....a trait that builds amazing character in a high school student. I dont care who else Kentucky gets this year.....I want Shane Watson and I want him now. Micah needs a partner and a Micah/Watson linebacking core is one that would take my entire attention at future UK home games and make the miserableness of the UK band a little more tolerable. SHANE, SHANE, SHANE........
