On Sunday, Georgia Amoore and Dazia Lawrence celebrated Senior Day in their first year as a Wildcat. While it wasn’t technically the last time these two would play on the floor at Memorial Coliseum, it was definitely a special one. Kentucky battled the LSU Tigers and despite a loss, had a memorable second-to-last regular season game in Lexington.

After an extremely chippy 10-foul first quarter, the ‘Cats were off to a two-point lead over the Tigers. Teonni Key exited the quarter early after earning two of those fouls herself, and didn’t step foot on the court until the second half. Plus, both teams were shooting a minuscule 8-33 (24.2%) from the field. However, Kentucky was off to a strong start, out rebounding the Tigers 13-11.

Not much changed in the second. Clara Strack earned her second foul and made her way to the bench, but that didn’t stop Clara Silva from stepping up big time. After shooting only 1-11 from three in the first, Amoore, Lawrence, and Amelia Hassett combined to make four more three-pointers to end the half. Plus, Amoore added one of the craziest scoop-and-scores ever. A block on Aneesah Morrow, and then deflected the ball to herself over Kailyn Gilbert for a reverse layup.

But, it’s not an LSU Women’s Basketball game with something to say about Kim Mulkey. Of course, she did not look happy after this jumper by Clara Silva. Shout out to the person on the camera that caught this valuable clip.

Clearly, Mulkey must’ve said something to her team at the break, because LSU came out with more spark than ever. To start the third quarter, the Tigers made three straight shots before being silenced by a long jumper from Saniah Tyler. However, LSU was inching closer and closer to the ‘Cats, with only a seven-point deficit with seven minutes to go in the third. Teonni Key made her way back on the floor to try and make an impact for the ‘Cats.

It just seemed like the first quarter all over again. Extremely chippy, shots not falling, and no idea what would come next. Despite out rebounding LSU 23-20 in the first half, LSU got out to a hot start on the boards, finishing the third quarter with 15 rebounds compared to Kentucky’s six. All was well, until LSU finally cut Kentucky’s lead to one with less than four minutes in the third. After a painful 11-1 run in favor of the Tigers, they finally took the lead, 43-42, with 3:36 to go in the quarter. To end the third, LSU led Kentucky, 49-44.

The fourth quarter started slow, just like the first. With less than seven minutes to go, the only basket of the quarter was shot by LSU’s Morrow. It was ugly, but it meant the ‘Cats still had a chance at a comeback. Being down only seven, it would take some hustle, but Kentucky could get it done.

After an 8-0 run, Kentucky took the lead by one. Just for Clara Strack to earn her fourth foul of the day and send Shayeann Day-Wilson to the free throw line. Wilson made both, and then Mikaylah Williams added a jumper in the paint. With LSU up three, Strack made her way to the paint to draw a foul and make two free throws. It was a one point game, again. With two minutes to go, LSU grabbed a bucket to make it a three point game, and all of Memorial Coliseum was on edge. It seemed like every shot taken was the one that would decide the game. Williams, who finished with 24 points, was on fire. Down three, Kentucky needed some production, and fast.

In the last minute of the game, Williams drained a three-pointer to extend LSU’s lead to four. Kenny Brooks quickly called a timeout and drew up a play to give Teonni Key a chance at a basket, but a bad pass from Strack turned the ball over to the Tigers. With only 30 seconds and four points to make up, it almost seemed impossible that Kentucky could come out with a win. LSU added a free throw and an offensive rebound to draw another foul, making the Tigers’ lead six. Kenny Brooks used his final timeout of the game with 25 seconds to go. A missed three by Amoore with 17 seconds to go sealed the deal in this Top 25 matchup.

Fortunately, Kentucky Women’s Basketball isn’t finished. The ‘Cats take on the No. 15 Tennessee Lady Volunteers on Thursday, Feb. 27 for the final regular season home game of the year. Tipoff is set for 7:00 p.m. EST and can be watched on the SEC Network.
