No. 21 Woodford County cruises 52-12 in revenge win over South Oldham

We had our first KSR Game of the Week blowout of the season on Friday night in Versailles.
Coming off a bye, the No. 21 Woodford County Yellow Jackets (5-1) found the end zone not even 70 seconds into the first quarter and never looked back en route to a dominant 52-12 district win over the South Oldham Dragons (5-2). A running clock was activated midway through the second half. This one was personal for Woodford County, which lost this very game nearly one year ago to the day, 32-27.
“We lost this game last year, came in a little underprepared,” Woodford County junior QB Foxx Coons, a first-year starter, said postgame. “We all wanted to beat this team. We don’t like them, for real. We just wanted to start 1-0 in the district.”
Junior RB Darrian Tomlin quickly put Woodford County on the board, taking a handoff roughly 50 yards to the house just a little over a minute into the action. South Oldham cooked up a game plan to respond though that initially played out well. The Dragons chewed up over eight full minutes of game time by sticking to the ground, but their first drive eventually stalled out a little past midfield. That led to a poor snap on a punt attempt that went over the punter’s head and set up the Yellow Jackets in prime scoring position.
South Oldham’s defense would step up and hold Woodford County to a field goal, but it was already a 10-0 score by the end of the first quarter. Despite controlling the time of possession, the Dragons had nothing to show from it. WoFo would slowly break the game open from there. A long touchdown throw from Coons to senior WR Jalen Johnson made it a 17-0 score. Soon after, another long toss from Coons found junior Omari Jointer to make it 24-0.
The Dragons were officially reeling at this point — and it wouldn’t get any prettier. South Oldham failed to convert a 4th down in its own territory, leading to Coons’ third touchdown throw of the second quarter, this one going to junior ATH Grayson Hodge. It was a 31-0 Yellow Jacket lead at the intermission. By the end of the third quarter, Woodford County put a running clock on South Oldham behind a 38-0 advantage.

Senior WR Anthony Dixon would finally get South Oldham some points near the end of the third period, taking a long run into the end zone that would keep his team from being shut out. Dixon, who finished with 239 combined yards, found pay dirt again early in the fourth quarter, this time running 45 yards for a touchdown that made it 45-12 in favor of Woodford County. But that was where the good news came to an end. The Yellow Jackets tacked on another score for good measure with a few minutes to go, giving us the final result of 52-12.
“We had a different mentality, we wanted revenge,” Woodford County head coach Dennis Johnson said. “First district game is very, very important. That put us behind the eight ball last year. And they’re a good football team, but our guys came in prepared.”
Woodford County improved to 3-0 on the season against in-state teams with Friday’s win. The Yellow Jackets continue district play next week against Collins before a massive showdown with Scott County the following week. Meanwhile, South Oldham will return to work as Scott County comes to town next Friday for another pivotal district matchup.
