After news broke of an incoming maximum contract extension for Bam Adebayo earlier this week, another former Kentucky Wildcat is about to receive a similar payday.

According to The Athletic’s Shams Charania, the Denver Nuggets are “working toward” signing a four-year, $209 million max extension deal with point guard Jamal Murray. Currently signed through the upcoming 2024-25 season where he’s set to earn $36 million, this new deal will keep the 2023 NBA champion with the franchise that drafted him through the 2028-29 season.

This past season, Murray averaged 21.2 points, 6.5 assists, 4.1 rebounds, and one steal in 31.5 minutes per outing on shooting splits of 48.1/42.5/85.3. He played just 56 games due to minor injuries early on in the season, which prevented him from making a serious All-Star run, but he was the second-best player on a team that went 57-25.

After a one-and-done season at Kentucky in 2015-16, Murray was the 7th overall pick in the 2016 NBA Draft by the Nuggets. He was tabbed to the All-Rookie Team in 2016-17 and finished Top 10 in Most Improved Player voting the following season. The 6-foot-4 point guard would miss the entire 2021-22 season due to a torn ACL, but quickly rounded back into the form over his last two campaigns.

As mentioned, Murray was a member of the NBA championship squad in 2023 that beat the Miami Heat (which included Adebayo) in five games during the Finals. During those Playoffs, he posted per-game averages of 26.1 points, 7.1 assists, and 5.7 rebounds alongside three-time MVP Nikola Jokic. The Nuggets were bested in the Western Conference Semifinals this past season but will return the majority of its core in 2024-25.

Once Murray (27 years old) signs this new contract, he and Jokic (29) will be locked in with the Nuggets for at least the next four seasons.
