Kentucky has not recruited South Florida frequently as of late, but four-star EDGE R Mason Thomas became a wanted prospect in the class of 2022.

However, the Wildcats were unable to close.

After being committed to Iowa State for over six months, R Mason Thomas became a flip on National Signing Day as the blue-chip prospect will continue his playing career at Oklahoma. New head coach Brent Venables just got a big addition to a top-10 recruiting class.

A top-300 prospect in the class of 2022, Kentucky targeted R Mason Thomas and was able to get the 6-2, 217-pound outside linebacker on campus for an official visit in December. However, Thomas decided to wait until the second signing day and UK lost ground.

Oklahoma issued an offer to R Mason Thomas on Dec. 10 and followed that up with an official visit on Jan. 21. Venables made the trip to South Florida to visit the Fort Lauderdale (Fla.) Cardinal Gibbons product on Jan. 25 as the Sooners were able to hold off a late push from Miami and new head coach Mario Cristobal.

Where does Kentucky go at EDGE?

As of now, Kentucky has just four scholarship players on the roster scheduled to be in defensive coordinator Brad White’s position room this summer. Getting Jordan Wright back for a super senior season was significant, but Kentucky needs depth.

The Wildcats scored a pair of blue-chip recruiting wins in landing Tyreese Fearbry and Keaten Wade. However, the numbers are very thin, and Kentucky will have to move on without R Mason Thomas.

Noah Matthews could be a late addition to the room as White tries to build depth at outside linebacker.
