Quarterback was one of the many positions in which Randall Cobb shined during his days at Kentucky. With Aaron Rodgers out for the season, Cobb may be called on to play QB once again.

New York Jets coach Robert Saleh announced today that Cobb will be the “emergency quarterback” in Week 2 vs. the Dallas Cowboys behind Zach Wilson and Tim Boyle. As you likely remember, the 13-year NFL veteran played quarterback (and wide receiver and return specialist) during his days at Kentucky, completing 62 passes for 689 yards and five touchdowns. Over his three seasons in Lexington (2008-10), Cobb also rushed for 1,313 yards and 22 touchdowns; caught 144 passes for 1,661 yards and 13 touchdowns; and scored two touchdowns on punt returns.

During his professional career, Cobb is 1-4 for 10 yards passing, that lone completion coming in the 2017 season with the Green Bay Packers. Coincidentally, on Sunday, he’ll be facing his former coach, Mike McCarthy, who is now with the Cowboys. Cobb also played for Dallas in 2019. It seemed like his NFL career may be over when he walked off the field with Rodgers in Green Bay last year, but he joined Rodgers for one more run in New York, signing a one-year, $3 million deal. Playing quarterback again would truly bring everything full circle.

While the idea of seeing the WildCobb again is thrilling, Jets head coach Robert Saleh says the team is sticking with Zach Wilson as the starter. The third-year quarterback out of BYU completed 14 of 21 passes for 140 yards with one touchdown and one interception in the Jets’ overtime win vs. Buffalo on Monday.

“Under no circumstances is any of this a competition,” Saleh said earlier this week. “This is Zach’s team and we’re rolling with Zach.”

…But a few plays with Cobb at QB couldn’t hurt. Just saying. Keep those Cowboys on their toes.
