READ: ESPN's profile on Rhyne Howard's upcoming rookie season
In just a few days, Rhyne Howard will make her official, much-anticipated WNBA debut.
The former Kentucky Wildcat superstar etched her name all over the history books in Lexington, leaving the program with over 2,000 points before hearing her name called as the No. 1 pick in the 2022 WNBA Draft. Since she was named National Freshman of the Year all the way back in the 2018-19 season, Howard has long been perceived as an eventual top selection. And while she ultimately achieved those goals, the road traveled wasn’t always an easy one.
On Tuesday morning, ESPN’s Alexa Philippou dropped a long-form feature article on Howard and her upcoming voyage into the WNBA. Philippou dives into the personal side of Howard’s journey over the last few years, which wasn’t always known due to her respectfully quiet nature. Some of the topics touched on are her artistic abilities, how she’s dealt with years of pressure, and looking ahead to the future. The article includes quotes from Kentucky head coach Kyra Elzy, Howard’s best friend/former Wildcat teammate Blair Green, and current Indiana Fever GM Lin Dunn, among others.
Howard has already played two preseason games for the Atlanta Dream, which moved up two spots just ahead of the Draft in order to take her No. 1 overall, which came with mixed results. The 6-foot-2 guard was stellar in her first outing but underwhelmed in round two. Howard’s actual debut will come this Saturday on the road against the Dallas Wings. The game will begin at 8:00 p.m. EST and will be broadcast live on the CBS Sports Network.
