Rhyne Howard named SEC Player of the Week for sixth time
Rhyne Howard Day has turned into Rhyne Howard Week.
Following two spectacular performances this past week for her Kentucky Women’s Basketball squad (15-11, 8-8 in SEC play), Howard has been tabbed as the SEC’s Player of the Week for the sixth total time in her career and first this season. The 6-foot-2 senior guard posted 19 points and 12 rebounds in a road win over Missouri on Thursday before exploding for a Senior Day record 32 points on Sunday against Auburn. In that same game against Auburn, she also drilled a school-record eight 3-pointers.
Howard was named the SEC Player of the Week four times as a sophomore, once as a junior, and now once as a senior. As a rookie, she was named SEC Freshman of the Week a record eight times en route to winning Freshman of the Year. Additionally, Howard was won the last two SEC Player of the Year awards and will surely be in contention for a third straight when the conference honors are unveiled later this season.
The week prior, Howard was named the Naismith Trophy Player of the Week. She was spectacular in a trio of wins for the Wildcats, averaging 20.7 points, 8.3 rebounds, and 3.7 assists. Her best outing was a 29-point, 10-rebound outing in a dominating road win over Arkansas.

Howard recently eclipsed the 2,000-point mark for her college career and is currently up to a total of 2,185 points, which is second all-time among both Kentucky men’s and women’s basketball players. She only trails the great Valerie Still, who finished with over 2,700 points during her four years at UK.
On the season, Howard is averaging 20.4 points, 7.7 rebounds, 3.3 assists, 2.6 steals, and 1.3 blocks on a shooting clip of 44.0/36.9/80.6. Kentucky is currently on a six-game winning streak, in large part due to Howard’s recent success, and earned a seven-seed in the upcoming SEC Tournament. As of right now, UK is projected to make the NCAA Tournament, but might need to win a game or two in the conference tournament to solidify its spot.
With Howard on the roster, Kentucky should feel good about its chances.
