And it won’t be the last, either.

On Wednesday afternoon, the WNBA announced that Atlanta Dream guard Rhyne Howard has been tabbed as the first Rookie of the Month for the 2022 season. The former Kentucky Wildcat averaged a team-high 16.9 points during her first month as a professional, leading the Dream to a surprising 5-3 start out of the gate. Howard is the franchise’s first Rookie of the Month winner since Brittney Sykes won in July and August of 2017.

Check out Howard’s reaction to the news.

It’s been an unbelievable start to her WNBA career for Howard. She dropped 33 points in just her fourth game for the Dream, reached the 100-point mark through just five outings, was named Eastern Conference Player of the Week in mid-May, and has been the best player on a team many expected to be in rebuild mode.

To go along with her team-best 16.9 points per game, Howard also averages 3.8 rebounds, 2.8 assists, 1.5 steals, and 0.9 blocks with just 1.1 turnovers per outing. Through eight games, she’s shooting 40.6 percent overall from the floor, a lethal 42.6 percent from distance on 6.5 attempts, and 76.5 percent from the free-throw line. The 6-foot-2, do-it-all superstar is already in rarified air just a few weeks into her career.

Howard and the Dream will hit the floor again on Wednesday night in Atlanta to host the Minnesota Lynx at 7:00 p.m. EST.
