Rick Barnes has John Calipari’s number. Tennessee’s 82-71 win over Kentucky tonight brings Barnes’ record vs. Cal as the Vols’ head coach to 8-5, making him the only active head coach to lead his team to at least three victories in Rupp. Tennessee has won six of its last nine games against Kentucky, a stat made even more depressing by the fact that tonight’s win is only the Vols’ seventh all-time in Rupp (1977, 1979, 1999, 2006, 2018, 2020, 2021).

In the Calipari Era, Tennessee is the only program to have logged wins over Kentucky for six consecutive seasons. Keep in mind Kentucky was up by 10 with 12 minutes to go and John Fulkerson, who killed the Cats last season, scored zero points. Defeat snatched from the jaws of victory is this team’s calling card.

Ugh.
