While Rick Pitino fights for another MAAC Title, the college basketball world is impatiently waiting for his next move. There’s already one sports book that believes he will not have to go far for his next stop as a head coach.

Thursday evening Georgetown announced it is parting ways with one of the greatest to ever suit up for the Hoyas, Patrick Ewing. The Hall of Fame center fell far short of expectations during six seasons at his alma mater. He compiled a 75-109 record in his first head coaching stop. The Hoyas went on a miraculous run to win the 2021 Big East Conference Tournament, but had only two wins in league play in the two years since.

The once proud program is now looking for just its fifth head coach in the last 44 years. There isn’t another John Thompson ready to take the reins, so who could it be? Rick Pitino checks a lot of boxes.

The former Kentucky and Louisville head coach has taken three different teams to the Final Four. Currently at Iona, the Gaels are seeking their second NCAA Tournament in three seasons under Pitino’s guidance.

Early oddsmakers believe the Georgetown job is made for Rick Pitino. At BetOnline.ag he is the favorite to be the Hoyas’ next head coach. Rick Pitino is not the only familiar name on the list.

Rick Pitino Hints at One More Move

There’s a reason people believe Rick Pitino will be looking for a new job this offseason. He said it himself. Just a few weeks ago he spoke with Matt Norlander and shared with the CBS reporter that if the right opportunity comes up, he might be ready to get back to high-major basketball.

“We’ve accomplished what we set out to do,” Pitino said. “If I wanted to leave, it would be a job that I thought could get to a Final Four. It would be a great place where I want to live, but I don’t see it happening. I don’t see it happening. I’m really tied into these kids. And they came because of me.”

Hilarious. He’s putting it out there that he wouldn’t mind leaving, then immediately tries to walk it back. Never change, Rick. Never change.

This does beg the question, is Georgetown the best available job? Texas is currently led by an interim coach. Notre Dame is preparing for life after Mike Brey. Meanwhile closer to home, members of the New York media are calling for St. John’s to ditch Mike Anderson and bring in Pitino.

All eyes will be on Rick Pitino this offseason, just the way he likes it.
