Rodney Terry reportedly out at Texas, Xavier's Sean Miller among top candidates

Texas has fired men’s basketball head coach Rodney Terry, according to multiple reports.
Terry spent three seasons as head coach of the Longhorns, finishing with an overall record of 62-37 (27-27 Big 12/SEC). He led Texas to the Elite Eight in his first season in charge (after taking over midseason following Chris Beard’s firing) before a Round of 32 finish last season. But in 2024-25, the Longhorns went 19-16 (6-12 SEC) and lost in the NCAA Tournament First Four to Xavier.

That was enough for AD Chris Del Conte to give Terry the boot.
[UPDATE (3:20 PM ET): Texas is reportedly hiring Xavier’s Sean Miller as its new head coach.]
Terry, 56, was first an assistant with the Longhorns under Rick Barnes from 2002-11. He started his head coaching career at Fresno State (2011-18), which included one NCAA Tournament appearance in 2016. He jumped to UTEP for three seasons before returning to Texas as an assistant in 2021. Terry took over as interim head coach in Dec. 2022 when Beard was arrested for domestic violence, a charge that was eventually dismissed, and subsequently fired.
CBS and ESPN both report Xavier head coach Sean Miller, the guy who just knocked Texas out of the NCAA Tournament, is among the top candidates to replace Terry in Austin. On3’s Joe Tipton has another interesting name on his Texas Hot Board: Illinois’ Brad Underwood, who will lead the (6) Fighting Illini into a Round of 32 matchup against (3) Kentucky on Sunday night.
Will Terry be the only SEC head coach on the move this offseason?
