Sagarin Preseason Ratings Released: Kansas #1, Kentucky #2

by:Jonathan Schuette11/08/12

Jeff Sagarin, known for his mathematical systems that rank various sports, released his annual preseason college basketball ratings with Kentucky slotted at #2 behind Bill Self’s Kansas Jayhawks who have yet to find more time.  These ratings seem to agree with the other notable Sabermetric computer systems like Kenpom.com and BasketballProspectus.com which place Kentucky 1st and 2nd in the nation respectively.  Rounding out the top five would be #3 Louisville, #4 Indiana, and #5 Ohio State.  The general consensus among college basketball analysts, Sabermetric and traditional, seems to be that nation’s elite are listed above (give or take a few), but the order of those teams varies depending upon who you talk to.

In terms of Friday’s match-up at the Barclays Center in New York, Sagarin’s system predicts that Kentucky will win by an 11 point margin over #57 Maryland.

The ratings in their entirety can be found here.
