It is award watch list season, and two Kentucky Wildcats are in contention for hardware at their respective positions. Sahvir Wheeler is on the preseason watch list for the Bob Cousy Award, given to the nation’s top point guard, and Kellan Grady is up for the Jerry West Award, presented to the nation’s top shooting guard.

Wheeler was also named First Team All-SEC by the media this morning. As a sophomore at Georgia, he led the SEC in assists per game with 7.4 and led the Bulldogs in scoring (14.0 points per game) and steals (1.7 per game). He was fifth in the country in assists per game and third in total assists. In only 24 games, Wheeler broke Georgia’s single-season assist record with 193 dimes.

Grady was named Second Team All-SEC this morning. At Davidson, he totaled 2,002 career points on 47.2% shooting. With 240 career 3-pointers, Grady has made at least 51 threes in all four seasons and shot a career-best 38.2% from behind the arc in 2020-21. He has 21 games with at least four 3-pointers. At Davidson, he was a four-time All-A-10 selection, including a two-time first-team pick. He averaged 17.4 points per game in his four-year Davidson career, 17.1 this past season as a senior.

Kentucky is no stranger to the Hoophall Awards. In 2016, Tyler Ulis won the Bob Cousy Award, and in 2017, Malik Monk took home the Jerry West Award. The watch lists for the Julius Erving (small forward), Karl Malone (power forward), and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (center) Awards will be announced soon. They’ll probably include more Wildcats.
