Sahvir Wheeler wins SEC Player of the Week

Congratulations are in order for Sahvir Wheeler, who was named SEC Player of the Week for his performance vs. North Carolina. The junior point guard was stellar vs. the Tar Heels, putting up 26 points — just one shy of a career-high — eight assists, and a season-high four steals in the 98-69 rout.
After going 0-5 from the floor vs. Notre Dame, his worst performance of the season, Wheeler came alive in Las Vegas, shooting 12-15 for 80%. Those 12 made field goals are a career-high. Saturday marked his fifth game this season with at least eight assists. On the other end of the floor, his four steals led to 14 fast-break points. According to Big Blue History, Wheeler is the first player in school history with at least 26 points, at least eight assists, and at least four steals in a game.

Wheeler was also named National Player of the Week by Andy Katz this morning. This is the second SEC weekly honor of his career. In December 2019, he won SEC Freshman of the Week while at Georgia. This is Kentucky’s second SEC weekly honor this season. TyTy Washington won SEC Freshman of the Week back on Nov. 22.
