The championship stage is set. 12 teams across six classes will go into Kroger Field this weekend looking to win a Kentucky state football championship, but only six will hoist a trophy. We’ll have three games on Friday with three more on Saturday.

Of the 12 teams headed to Lexington, seven of them will be searching for their school’s first-ever state championship: Raceland (1A), Sayre (1A), Owensboro Catholic (2A), Union County (3A), Franklin County (4A), Cooper (5A), and Ryle (6A). We’ll have a first-time champion no matter what in Class 1A.

Meanwhile, Trinity will look to extend its state record with a 29th state title and second in a row. Beechwood is gunning for an 18th overall championship (fourth in five years), Bowling Green a ninth (second straight), and Christian Academy-Louisville a fifth (third straight).

As we gear up for the championship round, we’re predicting the score for the six games on this weekend’s schedule. Using the On3 Massey Ratings — a system created in 1999 by statistician Kenneth Massey that was used to help determine the Bowl Championship Series (BCS) until 2013 — we are able to plug every high school team across the state into a tool that will predict the final outcome of any given matchup.
