Scott Davenport steps down at Bellarmine

Scott Davenport has been a member of the basketball culture in the city of Louisville for a very long time. The Derby City native was a graduate assistant at Louisville under Denny Crum, the head coach at Louisville (Ky.) Ballard High School for a decade, and an assistant at Louisville under Crum and Rick Pitino for a decade.
That long career is coming to a close after 20 seasons running the basketball program at Bellarmine University. Scott Davenport is stepping down after a long career in basketball in the Bluegrass State.
Scott Davenport was the head coach at Ballard when that program faced Clay County and star Richie Farmer in the state finals twice in the 1980s. Davenport coached NBA star Allan Houston during that time period at Ballard. After serving as an assistant coach at Louisville, Davenport took over a Division II program at Bellarmine. The Knights made the postseason in year four under Davenport and won the national championship in 2011. Bellarmine would make three more Final Four appearances (2012, 2015, and 2017) under Davenport.
Bellarmine transitioned to Division I for the 2020-21 season and won the ASUN conference tournament in 2022. Unfortunately, a transition rule prevented the Knights from receiving a bid to the NCAA Tournament. Davenport is retiring just three years later. The head coach recorded 423 wins during his two decade run at Bellarmine.

The Louisville (Ky.) Iroquois product is stepping away from the basketball in the Bluegrass for the first time since he left to be an assistant coach at VCU in 1985. However, he will not be far away. Scott Davenport’s son, Doug, has been named the head coach in waiting at Bellarmine. The Davenport name is still going to be involved in Kentucky basketball.
