Scott Frost, Nebraska marriage just has not worked in Big Ten
The top-ranked coaching hire following the 2017 season has been snakebitten. Scott Frost has not been able to turn Nebraska into a relevant football program in the Big Ten.
On Saturday, the Huskers kicked off the beginning of the college football season with a 30-23 loss to Illinois. In Bret Bielema’s first game at Memorial Stadium, the Illini took the fight to Nebraska and looked to be the better-coached team for all four quarters.
“Our strategy for this was to rep against a certain look all of camp against our defense and we guessed wrong on what they were going to be in,” Frost said postgame about the Illini’s defensive strategy. “Their defensive guys, they come from a place where they’ve been a lot of odd front — we didn’t get more than four or five snaps of odd, I don’t think.
“We had a contingency plan for that and we were going to go back to stuff that we’ve been running all camp — we went through that this week with the kids — but we certainly didn’t get as many reps at it as we normally would.”
The lack of successful preparation led to Nebraska’s tailbacks recording just 54 yards on 19 total carries. Not only was Nebraska outplayed, but it also appears that the Huskers were outcoached. This is not something you want to see in a huge game to kickoff year four of a regime. Now Frost has a record of 12-21 at his alma mater with a 9-18 record in conference play.

However, the play on the field isn’t the only bad thing with the program right now.
Nebraska is currently going through an NCAA investigation while over 50 players have left the program and entered the transfer portal over the last three seasons. Wan’Dale Robinson was the biggest of the bunch and the junior is set to be a cornerstone piece of a new-look Kentucky offense this season. Meanwhile, the Huskers’ South Florida recruiting blueprint has backfired.
With three straight losing seasons, another one could be coming to Lincoln in 2021. The Huskers still must play Oklahoma in the non-conference while having to go to Michigan State, Minnesota, and Wisconsin in conference play. Nebraska will host Ohio State in what will be a very difficult game to win.
Scott Frost and Nebraska appear to be in big trouble. A very ugly season could be coming and the former rising star could be looking for a new job. Winning in college football can be hard.
Could the coaching carousel start early in 2021?
