Kentucky Basketball Scouting Report

 Opponent: Ole Miss             Date: 1/6/15

 General
  • 9-4 on the season including wins over Creighton, Cincinnati, and @ Oregon.
  • Best free throw shooting team in the country at 78.4%.
  • Very good, experienced backcourt in #42 Moody, #32 Summers, and #10 White.
Personnel #32      G         Jarvis Summers: 6’3’’ 186     SR. [caption id="attachment_150919" align="alignright" width="300"]Jarvis Summers is the SEC's active leader in career points & assists. He is one of the best pure scorers in the SEC, but just hasn’t been shooting the ball nearly as well as he did last season. Summers is shooting just 37% from the field and 27.5% from beyond the arc. Still, he is a very dangerous scorer who can really get going. Averaging 13.3 points per game and 4 assists. #42      G         Stefan Moody: 5’10’’ 179     JR. Moody has now played for 3 schools in 3 years, but he has scored a ton of points everyone he has been. After averaging nearly 30 ppg as a senior in high school, Moody went to Florida Atlantic where he was the Sun Belt Conference Freshman of the Year. Now, he is the Rebels leading scorer at 13.9 ppg. He is a very quick guard who will be very aggressive offensively. Moody is a very good 3-point shooter and the leading free throw shooter in the SEC at 92.2%. #10      G         LaDarius White: 6’6’’ 205     SR. He received his first start of the season in the Rebels last game against Austin Peay. White is a big, strong wing with a very versatile skill set. He is their leading 3-point shooter, connecting on 47.8% of his 3’s (22/46). White is best as a catch-and-shoot guy so we need to do a good job of making him score contested 2’s over our length. 12.5 ppg. [caption id="attachment_171255" align="alignright" width="250"]Saiz Sebastian Saiz has really improved his game around the rim this season. He is a long, athletic presence down low for Ole Miss.[/caption] #11      F          Sebastian Saiz: 6’9’’ 233       SO. A native of Spain, Saiz had a solid freshman season for Ole Miss. He has really improved around the basket, in large part due to adding some size and strength during the offseason. He has game in the post and is averaging 7.2 points and 4.7 rebounds per game. #4        F          M.J. Rhett: 6’9’’ 240                        SR. Rhett graduated from Tennessee State in 3 years and was able to have immediate eligibility after transferring to Ole Miss. The big man averaged 11 points & 9 rebounds last season and recorded 9 double-doubles. He plays a lesser role for the Rebels, but still is capable of scoring inside. He is averaging 6.4 points and 5.2 rebounds per game. He is a very good offensive rebounder. __________________________________________________________________________________________ #1        G         Martavious Newby: 6’3’’ 210          JR. He had started the first 12 games leading up to Austin Peay. Newby is extremely athletic and is best as a driver and slasher offensively. He can knock down an open 3 though. He is a very good offensive rebounder so we have to be aware of him crashing the glass. Newby leads Ole Miss in rebounding with 5.4 per game. #3        G         Terence Smith: 6’4’’ 195                   SR. Smith was a big time scorer at Tennessee-Martin, scoring over 1000 points in his 3 years there. He is averaging 4 points per game off the bench for Ole Miss. He is aggressive when he comes in the game and about half of his shots have come from beyond the arc. #34      F          Aaron Jones: 6’9’’ 230                      SR. Jones started the majority of games for the Rebels last season, but is coming off the bench this year. He is a big, strong presence down low and is a good free throw shooter. Good shot blocker. #23      C         Dwight Coleby: 6’9’’ 240                 SO. Coleby could play a big role tonight to provide some more size in the Ole Miss lineup. After a strong freshman campaign, Coleby is having another solid season off the bench for the Rebels. He is a very good rebounder, especially on the offensive glass, and finishes everything around the rim. Keys to the Game
  • Don’t lose the backcourt battle. Kentucky has the clear advantage down low, as we do against everyone in the country, but Ole Miss’s guards have the talent and experience to matchup against ours. Moody, Summers, and White can all really score and can get going from beyond the arc. We will need to know where those three are at all times and make them shoot contested 2’s over our size & length around the rim.
  • Dominate the paint. Ole Miss has solid, strong big men, but they simply can match our height. They don’t have a player on their roster taller than 6’9’’ which does not bode well against Kentucky. Our big guys should be able to get deep post catches and 2nd chances all night long.
  • Don’t foul. This may seem like a silly key, but against the Rebels it is especially important. We are more talented than Ole Miss, but if we hand them 20 free points at the free throw line they could easily hang around. As the nation’s top free throw shooting team, they really can stay in games, and certainly maintain a lead, because of their outstanding foul shooting.
