Sean McVay is still the youngest coach in the NFL despite finishing his sixth season with the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday. The play-calling head coach that came from the Mike Shanahan coaching tree won a Super Bowl last season and has collected three NFC West titles.

However, McVay is about to finish his first losing season as a head coach. Injuries have plagued the Rams this season and this franchise mortgaged its future by trading numerous first round draft picks for Matthew Stafford and Jalen Ramsey in addition to not having much money to spend in free agency in the near future. For the fourth year in a row, the Rams will not have a pick on day one of the NFL Draft.

The roster is getting old and a long rebuild could be coming to SoFi Stadium. Now there is a belief emerging that McVay could step away from coaching after the season ends.

Sources are telling ESPN’s Adam Schefter that McVay’s future with the Los Angeles Rams is up in the air.

“Sources believe McVay will take some time after Sunday’s regular-season finale against the Seattle Seahawks to determine whether he will return in 2023,” Schefter wrote on Saturday night.

“McVay has gone back and forth on the decision and needs time to get away to process all that has transpired over the past year: winning a Super Bowl, being courted to work in television, getting married, watching his wife’s home country of Ukraine invaded, losing his grandfather and then coaching a team that has fallen short of its expectations.”

Why does that matter in the Bluegrass State? Because McVay’s offensive coordinator could be making a return to Lexington.

Schefter brought up Chris Mortensen’s previous report that Liam Coen is “planning to return” as Kentucky’s offensive coordinator. The smoke surrounding McVay only strengthens that possibility.

Earlier this week, Coen told reporters in Los Angeles that he had not yet made a decision on what to do at the end of the year, but confirmed that an offer was on the table for him. Much like McVay, Coen is going to take some days after the season ends on Sunday to make a final decision.

If McVay is planning to step away and go to do television somewhere in 2023, that makes the decision for Coen to return to the SEC a lot easier. Kentucky could be announcing a new offensive coordinator very soon.
