It just means more in the Southeastern Conference. With league play getting started over the weekend for everyone in college basketball, the conference known for strong football play is making some noise on the hardwood.

A case can be made that the SEC is the best conference in college basketball this year. In the latest bracket projection from ESPN’s Joe Lunardi, the league led all conferences with nine bids. In the most recent update at KenPom, the SEC has four top-20 teams and seven top-40 teams.

  • 4.) Tennessee
  • 5.) Auburn
  • 10.) Alabama
  • 18.) Kentucky
  • 30.) Mississippi State
  • 35.) Texas A&M
  • 37.) Florida

John Calipari’s Kentucky program is looking for its first outright league title since 2019-20. The Wildcats currently have a regular-season championship drought in conference play and it could be very difficult to end that this season. This is a league with four top-20 teams at the moment and multiple national championship contenders.

Outside of the top 40, South Carolina (13-1) and Ole Miss (13-1) are both off to terrific starts. Arkansas is a team with talent that could get things rolling at any point. The conference has top-end star power and good depth.

Is it the best league? That is debatable. The Big 12 again looks very strong with 10 teams in the top 40 at KenPom. However, a case can easily be made for the SEC. Expect some heated games in the conference over the next two months.
