It used to be simply the NBA All-Star Game, but now it is the NBA All-Star Games (plural). The league and TNT have found a way to drag what should be about a two-hour event into a three-plus-hour marathon. This year, instead of a traditional game, players split up into four teams and played tournament style with each game going to 40 and prize money on the line. While no Kentucky players prevailed victorious as part of Shaq’s OG squad, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Karl-Anthony Towns, and Tyler Herro all repped Big Blue Nation well.

NBA MVP frontrunner, Gilgeous-Alexander, started strong by leading Chuck’s Global Stars (comprised of all International Players and, for some reason, Trae Young and Donovan Mitchell) over Team Kenny’s Young Stars. SGA led all scoring with 12 while not missing a shot and finished off the game with a nice drive and dunk.

Karl-Anthony Towns and Tyler Herro each drained two 3-pointers a piece in the game, Towns for Team Chuck and Herro for Team Kenny, but ultimately that ended the Bucket’s incredible All-Star weekend, having won the 3-point contest on Saturday while you were watching Kentucky’s offensive ineptitude against Texas.

SGA and T in the Championship, Herro speaks on the new format

In the championship game, it was all Steph Curry. It is customary for the hometown hero to take all the shots and in true Curry-like fashion he not only took them, he made them. Team Shaq cruised by Team Chuck to a 41-25 win to earn the trophy and $125,000 each. Towns had eight points and SGA had four in the final showcase.

As for this new wonky format, Tyler Herro, who Kevin Hart roasted for his nervousness during introductions, isn’t a fan. Partially irked by his team’s early exit, he said, “It was my first experience, it is what it is, it was a short quick burst I feel like…I would still like the East vs West setup.”

Whether the new format will stick around is anyone’s guess. The NBA is always tinkering with All-Star weekend in an effort to draw eyeballs. One thing that will stay consistent for the immediate future is former Kentucky players taking center stage and showing out.
