Shai Gilgeous-Alexander unveils his signature shoe and it is...something

Former Kentucky guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is barrelling toward his first-ever NBA MVP award this season, but he is making a pit stop on this epic journey with his debut signature shoe. SGA signed with Converse in 2020, but the niche basketball brand made him their Creative Director in April 2024. Now, he has his own shoe and it is, well, judge for yourself.
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is a unique dude and his signature shoe, dubbed SHAI 001, embodies that persona. From the zipper enclosure to the puffed upper to the minimalistic branding, this ain’t your uncle’s sneaker. It features SGA’s logo on the tongue, stitchless molding, and a new radial traction pattern on the sole. This showcased monochromatic colorway is called Butter, but you can expect several other vibrant versions down the line.
Gilgeous-Alexander, himself, played a huge role in its design, turning over personal sketches to the Converse design team. According to Converse Design Director Steven Keating, “I’ve been working with top athletes for 20 years in this field, and I’ve never met an athlete that can sketch like Shai.”
You think this shoe is a never-before-seen design? That’s the point.
“I wanted to create something new,” Gilgeous-Alexander said of his debut shoe. “I wanted to bring Converse into my world and see it through my lens.”
