Should Morgan Newton have transferred?

by:Rashawn Franklin07/16/12
Looking ahead to the upcoming season, it’ll be hard for Morgan Newton to see the field. Sophomore Maxwell Smith is progressing in Randy Sanders’ offense and it looks like he has firm grasp on the starting job for now. The backup position doesn’t necessarily belong to Newton either. The fan base is in love with new recruit, Patrick Towles, whom the coaching staff has already said will get some playing time one way or another. If Smith were to go down, Phillips would be almost forced to play Towles or face even more heat from the Commonwealth. That leaves Newton as a third string quarterback -- unless something drastic happens -- which is a far drop off for a former starter. It begs the question, should Newton have used his last year of eligibility elsewhere? Tons of quarterbacks have gone to other programs to find playing time. One example that comes to mind is Wisconsin’s Russell Wilson. Wilson, a third-round pick in April's NFL draft, was a three-year starter at North Carolina State before transferring to Wisconsin after problems with head coach Tom O’Brien. While Newton doesn’t have the collegiate resume' of Wilson, he was a starting quarterback in the SEC which holds a lot of merit with mid-major schools. Newton transferring to a smaller school, or even a more prominent school that has quarterback issues, would have ensured his last year of eligibility was put to use. He likely now has to watch from the sidelines in his last year as a Wildcat. What do you guys think? Are you glad to have Newton back simply for the leadership aspect or would you have like to see him try and get playing time at another program?
