Coming into the first round of the KHSAA Boys’ Sweet 16, some heavy favorites drew more favorable runs to Saturday’s state championship game than others, but favorable would not be a fair assessment for the draw that No. 6 Danville Christian Academy received in its first-ever Sweet 16 appearance since the program’s establishment for the 2017-18 season.

The Warriors had only lost one game since the turn of the calendar year — a one-point loss to Lexington Catholic on February 18th. So, when they were ultimately slated to face No. 12 South Oldham in the first round, their six-game winning streak would be put to the test.

Ultimately, South Oldham would come away with a 67-44 victory, denying Danville Christian a taste of victory in Rupp Arena. This is the Dragons’ first win in the Sweet 16 since 2016.

Right out of the gate, it was apparent that this would be a back-and-forth game, and after one, it was 13-12 Danville Christian. The Warriors had two bigs in Geu Leek Ateny and Lual Ayiei who had a significant size advantage over anyone South Oldham could throw at them, so that was the plan of attack to begin things.

However, the Dragons would quickly start to stack bodies in the paint, and more importantly, would start spraying from deep. Behind 10 made threes on 18 attempts, South Oldham jumped out to a 15-0 run to end the first half, making it a 38-20 ballgame with two more quarters to play.

The Dragons would use their three-point shooting (14-33 3PT) to carry them the rest of the way. They led 50-32 following the third quarter and would coast to a win from there. The Dragons had three players reach double figures — seniors Julian Miles (14 PTS) and Jake Fithian (17 PTS) along with junior Kolton Wuchterl (13 PTS).

South Oldham will take on No. 17 Jeffersontown, who just defeated the top-ranked St. Xavier Tigers in a thriller earlier on Wednesday. The quarterfinal matchup is set for 1:30 p.m. ET on Friday in Rupp.
