South Warren dominates Southwestern in 38-6 victory
Senior quarterback Bryce Button and company displayed a solid performance in a staggering 38-6 victory against the Southwestern Warriors. The South Warren Spartans have had a productive start to the season, and they seem to keep getting comfortable as Friday Night Lights continues throughout the Bluegrass.
Southwestern forced patience out of the Spartans in the first quarter. The Warriors displayed a stubborn defense and used penalties and forced fumbles to their advantage. But once the Spartans broke the plane midway through the second quarter, the rest of the game was theirs.
South Warren opted to receive in the second half, which gave Southwestern first possession and a long first drive. The Spartans eventually took over possession midway through the first quarter (like I said, a long drive), but a fumble gave it right back to the Warriors.
Neither team’s offense could break through the other’s defense in the first quarter, but a rushing touchdown by South Warren midway through the second quarter opened up the floodgates to get their offense rolling.
Button soon followed that with a 40-yard pass to sophomore Camden Page for a touchdown reception to make it 15-0 Spartans with four minutes to play before the half. South Warren put together two more touchdowns before halftime to take a 29-0 lead heading into the locker rooms.

The typical 15-minute halftime was extended to over an hour due to storms in south Bowling Green. But, the teams waited it out to come back for the remaining 24 minutes of play.
The muddy field and cold legs didn’t help either team starting the second half. South Warren managed a safety in the third quarter to go up 31-0, which was later answered by the lone touchdown reception for the Warriors to put six on the board.
With under a minute to play, junior receiver Jake Carter broke the goal line for South Warren to solidify the night’s final score at 38-6.
All in all, the Spartans adjusted their offense to take off in the second quarter, which set the pace for the remainder of the game. Button finished the night with 193 yards, four touchdowns, and a 60% pass completion rate.
The Spartans move on to play Gibson Southern in Fort Branch, Indiana on Sept. 13 at 7 p.m. CT.
