Steve Spurrier says Kentucky had 'bad game coaching plan' in 'embarrassing' loss to South Carolina
Steve Spurrier is a certified hater of the Kentucky Wildcats. We know this and have for decades. Every chance he gets to throw a jab at the folks in Lexington, he’s going to do it.
Remember when he said a 65-0 win over the Cats in 1996 “(doesn’t) prove very much” except that “we’re better than Kentucky” during his time at Florida? Or his infamous “Kentucky has a heck of a punter, I know that” line after holding the Cats to 96 total yards in a 54-3 win in 2011 at South Carolina?
Every step along the way, Steve Superior has made it clear he thinks very little of Kentucky football, and he has the record to back that up at 20-3 all-time. So you better believe the Head Ball Coach enjoyed South Carolina‘s 31-6 victory inside Kroger Field on Saturday.
In an appearance on ‘Another Dooley Noted Podcast’ this week, Spurrier called the Wildcats’ effort ’embarrassing’ while singling out the poor coaching on the Kentucky sideline.
“Their defense completely stymied a bad Kentucky offense. That was bad. … South Carolina played defense and they had the spirit. They just clobbered ’em, clobbered Kentucky,” Spurrier said. “… You can tell South Carolina was much better. Mentally, physically, and everything else – prepared to play. Kentucky had a bad game coaching plan and everything. It was embarrassing, I think, for them.”

SEC Championship game comments draw ire
The Wildcats racked up just 183 yards of offense including 44 through the air while allowing five sacks and 11 tackles for loss. It was as brutal an offensive effort you’ll find in conference play, certainly when considering South Carolina’s ho-hum expectations going into the year, picked to finish 13th in the league in the official 2024 SEC Preseason Media Poll.
And it wasn’t just the effort shown by the players and coaches getting the brunt of Spurrier’s criticism. The 79-year-old coach also made sure to get a shot in at Big Blue Nation before calling it a day, saying Kroger Field’s home-field advantage isn’t an advantage at all for the Wildcats.
“Kentucky at home? That didn’t mean anything,” he added.
Find something to be as passionate about as Spurrier is with Kentucky football. That man’s got deep-rooted hatred in his soul.
