The Kentucky offense needed a spark. Tayvion Robinson delivered the big plays the Wildcats needed vs. EKU, proving that he’s prepared to do his job in 2023.

Scoreless with under a minute to go in the first half, a long punt return by Barion Brown put the ball on the 24-yard line. At the same spot a dozen minutes prior, the Cats turned it over. This time they went to the end zone. Robinson did not expect the ball to come his way, but he was ready to make the reception in a tight window.

“That was a great ball,” Robinson said after the 28-17 win. “Honestly, I didn’t think it was coming to me the way the defense played it. I thought it was gong to Dane. He took a chance and we scored.”

That was one of two receiving touchdowns on the day for the super senior. He finished the day with a team-high six receptions for 136 yards.

Tayvion Robinson Answers the Challenge

Tayvion Robinson transferred from Virginia Tech to pile up stats for Liam Coen. Once the offensive coordinator left, things did not go according to plan. He had a couple of 100+ receiving yard games in September, then faded down the stretch in Rich Scangarello’s offense.

Robinson was clearly frustrated. It was evident on the field and in the locker room. This spring he rectified his issues with his teammates and coaches and promised to go to work. That work on the practice field is paying off on Saturdays.

“Those conversations were all constructive criticism. Evaluating last year, things I could’ve did better. This year I’ve gotten off to a good start doing those things that coach asked and it showed today,” Robinson said.

“He did some really good things,” Liam Coen said. “He’s been practicing that way. As I mentioned, the more he can do for us, the better our offense will be. I was really excited to be able to get to see him. When the bullets are flying, he shows up.”

Robinson has regained the trust from his teammates and coaches. When they needed him the most, he delivered in a big way.

“He’s a gamer. He’s one of those dudes that’s going to do what he’s coached to do. He’s going to do his job, but when he calls for the ball, when he wants to make a play, you gotta get the ball in his hands. And that’s what he did today,” said quarterback Devin Leary.

“It was really cool to see him, even on that jet sweep, he kind of hit a different gear. That’s just the type of player he is. When the lights are shining bright, when the offense needs a play, we have a lot of players on offense that can do that and he’s one of them. When his number is called, he’s going to make something happen.”

Tayvion Robinson was not always a reliable target in 2022. He’s quickly becoming Mr. Reliable for Devin Leary and the Kentucky offense.
