Texas Tech's Terrence Shannon Jr. in transfer portal, hears from Kentucky
Another Chicago-area native is hearing from the Kentucky Wildcats.
On Friday afternoon, multiple reports announced that Texas Tech’s 6-foot-6 junior guard, Terrence Shannon Jr., has put his name in the transfer portal. Not long after that, the Mac Irvin Fire tweeted out that Shannon has heard from the likes of UK, UConn, Illinois, and Michigan so far. Shannon played his high school basketball at Lincoln Park in Chicago, IL, and played AAU basketball for the Chicago-based Mac Irvin Fire, which was once coached by current Kentucky assistant Chin Coleman.
Texas Tech was knocked out of the 2022 NCAA Tournament on Thursday night in a 78-73 loss to Duke in the Sweet 16. Shannon potentially finished his Red Raiders career with eight points and two rebounds on 4-9 shooting. Reports indicate that a return to Texas Tech is on the table.
This news comes on the heels of what surfaced on Thursday night when LSU point guard Xavier Pinson put his name in the transfer portal and was quickly linked to the ‘Cats. Pinson played at Simeon Academy in Chicago, IL, and was also a member of the Mac Irvin Fire AAU program.

During his first three seasons with Texas Tech, Shannon steadily became a highly impactful player. He entered the 2021-22 season as a Preseason All-Big 12 member before averaging 10.4 points on 45.5 percent shooting overall and an impressive 38.4 percent clip from distance this year. Shannon’s length and skills on defense make him a perfect 3-and-D candidate. He was also tabbed to the 2021-22 John R. Wooden Award Watch List and Naismith Award Watch List during the preseason.
Kentucky has now reportedly reached out to four transfer options: Shannon, Pinson, Utah Valley center Fardaws Aimaq, and Missouri forward Trevon Brazile. More will surely be on the way.
